Queensland 1d. Specimen handstamps

Here are some examples of the 1d. specimen handstamps. For general information on the specimen and cancelled handstamps see here

When it comes to specimen examples, this issue is more complex than the other denominations in this series. It is the only one that has specimen handstamps on imperforate issues and there also exist manuscript specimen cancellations.

Kenneth Scudder in his book "Queensland Postage Stamps 1879 to 1912", lists a number of specimen handstamps found on this issue. They are:
  • Type 1. Capitals sans-serif, 21 mm x 2.5 mm. Known in black and violet, diagonally up from left to right. Scudder notes that the these examples would have been handstamped after November 1880. Reddish brown shades. Seen on perforated issues only
  • Type 2. Roman capitals, 23.5 mm x 3.25 mm. Known in black and Red (one example in Scudder's book), diagonally up from left to right. It was introduced in mid to late 1880. Vermilion / Scarlet shades. Seen on perforated issues only
  • Type 3. Capitals sans-serif, 15 mm x 2 mm. Known from one example in red on an imperforate stamp with a vermilion / scarlet shade. It is thought to have been introduced around 1880
  • Manuscript cancellations known in black and violet, diagonally up from left to right on perforated issues. Scudder notes that an inverted violet example is also known but this has not been seen by me. According to Scudder these manuscript cancellations are on the the 1st watermark issues. A manuscript cancellation with the word S is also known on an imperforate proof
Type 3 is the most rare, with only one copy known. I have only seen one example of Type 2 in red. Type 2 is less common that type 1 in black. No multiples have been seen for type 2
